Coffees from Mexico
Written by “Coffee Review”
Mexican botanists recognize approximately one hundred species of Arabica coffee plants that grow at high altitudes as the source of all the world’s celebrated gourmet coffees. Arabica coffee arrived in Mexico sometime around the start of the 19th Century from the West Indies, but wasn’t exported until the late 1800s.
Over the years, Mexico, like many South American countries, is gaining more attention for its single-origin, Fair Trade, and organic coffees. Some of this is due to the Mexican Coffee Council, which has been working to increase Mexican coffee’s reputation, primarily by implementing an official quality certification program.
Mexico produces over 5 million bags of coffee a year, and is one of the largest producers of certified organic coffees, even though the Mexicans themselves consume over half the coffee produced in their country. The U. S. gets over a half of what is left – we take at least 25% of Mexico’s total crop.
Coffees from Vera Cruz and Coatepec are much different from Oaxacan Plumas, which are in turn much different from coffee of the Southernmost region of Chiapas. It is necessary to explore coffee selections of the different regions to get an idea of the possibilities of Mexican coffee. They are all different, although it is widely thought that the coffees from Oaxaca and Chiapas – especially those of the Altura grade - are the finest.
The region around Vera Cruz and Chiapas account for 60 to 70% of the Mexican coffee crop, with the remainder being grown in Puebla and Oaxaca states. The coffee grown in Chiapas and Oaxaca is called Altura, meaning “high grown”. Where coffee is concerned, higher almost always means better, so Mexican Altura coffees (and to a similar degree, coffees of the Coatepec district of Vera Cruz) are considered very high quality and among the finest grown in all the Americas.
